Where will I be using my two way radios? Very basic advice is that VHF works better outdoors and UHF is better for local indoor use. Analogue two way radio will be around for a long time. So don't be pressured into buying digital by rogue dealers, who might insist that analogue is being "phased out". There is though, a good case for choosing digital two way radios. As well as future proofing your system, digital radios are very spectrum efficient. Digital technology has doubled the possible number of users on a single radio channel. Digital two way radio also has enhanced facilities, which are constantly being improved and added to. How do I choose my two way radio system? Big Tip: Think benefits, NOT features. Modern two way radios have many, many features... but which ones do you really need? Many such systems slowly fall into disuse, because end users are overwhelmed by all the features. Think of it like this... A feature is something the product can do. A benefit is something the product can do which is USEFUL... TO YOU! You have to decide what you NEED from a two way radio system. If you don't NEED a particular feature, then don't implement it. As already pointed out, two way radios come with many features. Here are a few that you may want to consider, but as we've said, keep in mind... "Do I need it?" and "Will it just confuse my staff?" Emergency features. "Emergency", "Lone worker" or "Man down" can alert other radio users to emergency situations. Keep in mind that a radio with a display is needed to identify the users. Imagine someone telling you, "There's an emergency, but We've no idea who's in trouble!" Selective Call. With selective calling, a user can call only the user/s he needs, in groups or individually. This can be useful if privacy is needed, or simply to prevent radios not involved in the conversation from hearing unwanted chatter. Variable Transmit Power. The heaviest drain on a battery happens while the radio is transmitting. This can occasionally cause battery life problems on heavily used systems. Reducing transmit power will extend the shift life of battery, but at a cost. It also reduces the transmit range. Some radios can allow the user to switch between high and low power.
