There are three main battery chemistry types; nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium ion (Li-ion).

Nickel cadmium (NiCd) is the oldest chemistry.
Nickel cadmiums out-perform other battery types in extreme high and low temperatures.

Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are similar to nickel cadmium.They are lighter and more compact than nickel cadmium batteries.

Lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries are the lightest and most compact.

Batteries are normally designed to offer a full 8 hour duty shift from a single charge.

Also, bear in mind that some two way radio manufacturers make different chargers for different chemistries of battery.
